What is Constructionline?

Constructionline is named in a lot of tenders, but it is not quite the same kind of thing as CHAS. Here is what it actually is.

The short answer

Constructionline is a government-owned pre-qualification register. Contractors submit their company information once and keep it updated, and buyers use the database to shortlist suppliers who have already passed pre-qualification checks. It is an SSIP Supporter Member rather than an assessment scheme in its own right, but its membership tiers bundle an SSIP health and safety certificate, so holding Constructionline at the right level gives you SSIP recognition.

The membership tiers

Gold is the level most commonly required by Tier 1 contractors and larger public sector frameworks, because it maps to the Common Assessment Standard.

How the SSIP part works

The health and safety questions in Constructionline are aligned with the SSIP core criteria and reviewed by qualified assessors, with your risk assessments among the core evidence. The SSIP certificate bundled with membership is provided through a partner scheme, so a Constructionline member at the relevant tier is recognised as holding a valid SSIP health and safety assessment. In practice that means the health and safety documents you prepare are the same core criteria evidence used across CHAS, SafeContractor and SMAS.

What it costs

Constructionline does not publish standard prices. Membership is quoted by turnover band, with a first-year joining fee, and rises with the tier you choose. For a figure specific to your business you need a quote from Constructionline directly, so treat any headline number you see elsewhere with caution.
